Binary Triggers Legal Or Nah?

I've been trying to find out if binary triggers are legal in Florida. Just moved here a couple of months ago and honestly, getting a hang of all the laws has been a bit overwhelming. I keep hearing mixed things from folks at the range. Some say they're cool to use, while others act like it's a big gray area (related to the school shooting). I’d hate to buy one and then find out I’m breaking the law. Does anyone here have firsthand experience with this? Any advice would be super helpful!

It is a gray area. They are legal but not all place will allow you to shoot them in binary. I bought both Franklin armory and fostech triggers. I prefer the Franklin over the fostech. I had fun for a short time and then didn't use it very often. Mine now stays in Georgia where I use it outside of deer season to shoot pigs.

I've never seen a company that will ship FRT, Binary's, or a Super Safety to Florida. I wouldn't mind have one or three.

FRTs:
  • Florida Statute 790.222 bans devices that simulate automatic fire or increase the rate of fire beyond what's possible unassisted.
  • The ATF has stated that some FRTs are considered machine guns under federal law.

  • Possessing or selling FRTs in Florida carries legal risks, even if a specific model hasn't been specifically prohibited.
Binary Triggers:
  • Binary triggers fire on both trigger pull and release, effectively doubling the rate of fire compared to a standard semi-automatic trigger.
  • They are generally legal under federal law as long as they don't classify the firearm as a machine gun.

  • In Florida, modifying a firearm with a binary trigger is generally legal as long as the firearm itself is legal and the modification doesn't violate any laws.
Super Safeties:
  • Super safeties are accessories that enhance safety features of a firearm.
  • If the "super safety" doesn't increase the rate of fire or function as a bump stock, it is likely legal in Florida.

  • However, it's essential to stay informed about potential changes to firearm regulations.

Binary triggers are banned or restricted in several states. Currently, the list includes California, Connecticut, Delaware (rifles only), Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington, and Washington D.C. Minnesota recently banned binary triggers, making possession a felony.

Yep, I'm from Md., now in Fl & unfortunately, binary triggers are a no-no in both states. But they're cool as hell!!!! Yes I said it!

Florida Under legal review-POSTED ON JULY 2, 2025 BY BRADLEYJAMES

I would say, don't get into that dog fight, keep them locked up in the safe until the dust settles and all is quiet on the front.

A man was just arrested and charged with possessing a “machinegun” — but all he had was a forced-reset trigger. Now, reports say a Virginia gun range called the ATF on another shooter using an FRT, sparking outrage and legal questions across the firearms community.

Easy for them to file charges and make an arrest but it will be hard for them to get a conviction. They will most likely get slapped with a lawsuit

I found the statue here it is:
790.222 Bump-fire stocks prohibited.—A person may not import into this state or transfer, distribute, sell, keep for sale, offer for sale, possess, or give to another person a bump-fire stock. A person who violates this section commits a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. As used in this section, the term “bump-fire stock” means a conversion kit, a tool, an accessory, or a device used to alter the rate of fire of a firearm to mimic automatic weapon fire or which is used to increase the rate of fire to a faster rate than is possible for a person to fire such semiautomatic firearm unassisted by a kit, a tool, an accessory, or a device.
History.—s. 13, ch. 2018-3

This is so vague other than for bump stock. I think it was put into place to appease the masses with out affecting all. Binary triggers are as legal as an aftermarket lighter weight trigger.

100% CORRECT!
I agree, but that works in both directions. If one were arrested and put on trial, a counter suit can be filed against the state for damages. And at that point it paves the way for any other arrest after that for lawsuits. Adjusting a trigger pull weight also allows for a more rapid rate of fire. If you put a lighter pull weight trigger in a 10/22 and put your finger through the trigger guard and hook your belt loop. You can mimic a bump stock, in turn that makes a lighter weight trigger illegal.

I would guess, as you said that statement is so vague, that may be the reason that Rare Breed Triggers has it listed as "Under legal review."
I still say, don't get into that dog fight, until the dust settles.
