I have brass and I am looking at getting into reloading for my New Model Blackhawk. I have plenty of commercial hunting ammo for hogs and deer, but just target ammo for this cartridge is pricey. To date the only handgun ammo I have loaded is .357 mag.
Looking for advice on powders and bullets. Thanks in Advance for any suggestions

Trail Boss is great for general range use loads in 45 Colt, 44 Special, and other old school six shooter rounds. Trail Boss approximates black powder without the mess and is bulky enough to alleviate the possibility of a double charge.

Unique is another excellent powder for 45 Colt and is the go to for a lot of folks.

I have also used Titegroup, but you have to be careful. It is very much possible double charge a round with Titegroup.

For bullets, I use Bayou Bullets poly coated 200 grain lead.

I realize that the original 45 Colt was a 250 grain bullet, but 1K of 200 grain bullets costs less than 1K of 250 grain bullets.

There are lots of good poly coated bullets out there, run a googly search and find some at a price you like.

Copper plated bullets work good also, such as Berry's or X-treme.

I was thinking, great another powder to buy, but happen to have titegroup in the cupboard. Im not worried about double charges as I weigh each case individually and move from one tray to another when charged. I began loading with a lee loader and plastic mallet. Then a hand press. Even a single stage press seems fast to me now.
Thanks again.

I use a Dillon 550 and visually check all rounds.

6.5 to 7.7 grains of Titegroup with 200 grain cast bullets is the recommended data from Hodgdon. I tend to stay on the lower side, less powder = less cost per round.
