never could get a deer being i hunt on public land, the ones i have seen are very small

anyone else got tips?

For public land nothing beats knowing the land, walk alot of it. spend time there scouting. Get further back than the rest. Also check around campsites and check in stations you might be surprised of the deer activity there during hunt seasons

I'm 65 years old and this is only the second time in my life I doubled up on a hunt and this one is kinda special I did it with a crossbow. I shot this big Doe at 40 yards she ran about 15 yards and fell in this old loggin road. While I was watching the other two does try and double back on me I seen what I thought was one of the does sleaking back up the road I recocked my crossbow and when it went into the woods I lost it only to have it pop out 15 yrds from me I seen it was a nice 7pointer but on my weak side his nose to the ground I slowly shifted to turn when I got turned he is now broad sided at 25 yrds needless to say ended up across the road from the doe he was looking for.
