My friend has a 16' canoe with a 34lb thrust trolling motor on it that he calls the " SS Fukabout ". We were supposed to go fishing Friday but family stuff intervened , so it got pushed to this morn.
Waiting all wk to go fishing & it getting canceled the night before SUCKS but nuthin is screwin us up this mornin.
We're OFF!
Shell Mound here we come!
From Lake City it's a hellova haul down to Shell Mound or Cedar Key, but in the last 3yrs of my friend taking me, I've yet to regret making the trip even once.
We have to lol at ourselves bc we've joked about it bein a good thing we ain't takin any women with us bc they tend to want to bring half the house with them, but we certainly do a damn fine job of filling the car to the point where there ain't a square inch of free space in it & the canoe always ends up so full of crap that the canoe looks like a refugee raft on an Atlantic crossing.
We use cast nets & hip waders to catch our own bait & we go after trout, redfish, black drum, and sharks. But we are expanding on the fish species we are targeting. We've both been fishing since we were babies g enough to hold a fishing pole & these trips are better than birthday presents to us.
But we've both reached the age where we need at least a day of recovery after a fishing trip.
The last 2 trips we've found ourselves surrounded by schools of porpoises mating & feeding in the shallows.
Ahhhh whatta life huh!
The last trip to Ceday Key we watched a water spout form & do its thing for a good while. Pretty friggin scary - from a canoe lol, but hey, the fish were biting, so we weren't leaving.

Looks like it was a great trip!

It's always surprised me how much a shark/gator/manatee/dolphin grows when you're in a canoe instead of a real boat.

We caught a bunch of catfish & 1 sand perch & I hooked into a huge bull redfish about 25lbs on a 7' ultralight with 14lb test mono. I got it up to the canoe a few times after a good fight, but it would take off on another run, pulling out a lot of line. It crossed under the canoe a cpl times & the anchor line a cpl times which must have damaged the line & after 10-15 min of fighting it, the line broke with the fish 3' from me.
I'd have had to release it anyway, it was way over the 28" slot, but I'd love to have gotten it in the net & got pics either way it. I absolutely love fighting big fish on light tackle.
My friend shot two short videos of me fighting that fish, but there's some good cussing goin on in the first vid, so I'll only post this clip. It broke off shortly after this.
