I would like to to try some small game hunting. Been doing a lot of research on how to clean rabbits and squirrels. With a hunting license, can I simply go to my local Florida wildlife management area and hunt? I'd be hunting with my Ruger charger, technically a pistol. 22 lr. Do I have to have concealed carry permit to hunt with this ? Never got a permit since I only shoot recreationally.
Thanks for any input and advice.

1) Florida no longer requires a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Open carry is not allowed unless engaged in camping, fishing or hunting. So you can carry your Charger when hunting.

2) Download the rules and regulations for the WMA you are planning to hunt and make certain small game season is open. You will need a WMA stamp to hunt WMAs in FL. A FL Good Sportsman license covers everything except the Federal duck stamp for waterfowl. Some WMAs have archery only or primitive only seasons.

3) Many WMAs have small game only seasons once big game season is concluded.

Thank you for the insight. Much appreciated! Never came across a ' WMA stamp" in my search. I will definitely look further into it. Just looking to get started. I would like to keep it simple but well informed. Thanks.

From myfwc.com

A Management Area Permit is required to hunt on most of the lands owned, leased or managed by the commission. A hunting license is required unless you are exempt. Limited entry/quota permits may also be required to hunt during certain seasons.

40 - 50 years ago you purchased an actual stamp and attached it to the back of your paper license.

To start at the beginning, everyone born on or after June 1st, 1975 must pass a state approved hunter safety course before you can even purchase a hunting license.

Once you have that, you can set up your account at gooutdoorsflorida.com, and purchase licenses and apply for WMA permits.

For small game hunting on a WMA for example, you will need a hunting license ($17) and a Management area permit ($26.50).

Generally for small game one doesn't use quota permits, (you have to apply for these months before, it's a random drawing for deer and turkey mostly) but check your specific WMA brochure to be on the safe side.

Most management areas will have a box of cards at the check station as you drive in, take one for each hunter in your vehicle, keep it on your person, and fill it out and put it back in the box when you leave.

As far as your pistol goes, as long as it's legal to hunt with at the time, you can carry it however you want.
I would think a charger would be easiest on a sling, but that's just me.

Most important of all, be sure to leave the squirrel's antlers and beards attached until you get home, otherwise you risk getting a ticket 🫠

Here's some links that might be helpful.

Also the FWC has an app that's convenient, it's called,

Fish | Hunt FL

Hope some of this helps, Cheers!
