what should I get to take my kid fishing

I'm really new to fishing and thinking about taking my 5-year-old out for the first time. I noticed some kids' fishing rods at the store and I'm curious if that's a good option. I want this to be a fun experience for us since I didn't grow up fishing myself. Any suggestions on what kind of gear I should be looking at or how to keep it simple for our first outing?

I would look at the closed spool casters like a zebco. Weather salt or fresh water use live bait shrimp or worms. Just catch whatever bites meaning don't target specific fish like only bass or redfish and keep the experience short especially if not biting

cane pole is the simplest, no fuss about tangles and perfect for lifting panfish right out of the lilies where a conventional rod might get stuck on them while you reel in

When I went fishing with my boys of that age I used brad balls on a small hook with a bobber. Closed face spool castor. I would sometimes go with a Texas rig purple worm. When the boys asked about the worm I would ask Do you want to fish like daddy or do you want to catch something? Catching something always one. Make sure you take some nipper plyers along. I found it better to cut the barb than tear the fish up if it was hooked wrong. for kids that age.

I've been fishing since I was a small child & as an adult I've had a bunch of friends & fam with kids that I've taken fishing & there is no better pole & set up for a child than a Zebco with just a bobber, a small hook & a piece of Nightcrawler for pond/lake/river fishing.

Pickup a Walmart rod and reel combo. See if your kid has any interest. I've been fishing for a.long as I can remember fresh and salt water. Start easy with a rod and reel and some night crawlers and move your way up from there
